Design is not just about what it looks like; it’s about how it feels to walk through a space that was once a blank canvas and is now a living, breathing heritage experience.
An open site shaped around a Chettinad theme
For the Sharmada Foundation event, Wedding Chakra used Chettinad-inspired architecture, deep wooden textures and earthy tones to connect a series of spaces across an open site. The project extended beyond a single decorated stage: its layout brought together gathering areas, dining and dedicated guest activity zones.
The living courtyard
A central open-air courtyard, framed by a canopy of bougainvillea, acted as a gathering point. The design drew on the welcoming character of a traditional thinnai while connecting the surrounding event areas.
Indoor and outdoor dining
The plan included distinct indoor and outdoor dining settings. Carrying the design theme between these areas helped them feel part of one venue while giving guests different ways to experience the event.
The Womb of Light installation
The named “Womb of Light” area used lighting as a focal design element, adding a quieter setting for reflection within the wider event.
Guest experiences beyond the main gathering space
The design also included a foot-massage and relaxation area, with wooden pillars and comfortable seating. Indoor and outdoor play areas were integrated into the same Chettinad-inspired visual theme. These spaces broadened the venue experience beyond dining and the main gathering area.
What an open-site brief should cover
When planning a venue transformation, discuss how guests will arrive and move between functions, dining and quieter spaces. Review site conditions, permitted structures, power, lighting, access and installation arrangements with the venue and relevant specialists. Confirm each team’s responsibilities before agreeing the design scope.
